FREE road safety driving training for young people (pre-driving age)

July 12, 2012 Leave a comment

GMYN is working in partnership with UPS and UK Youth to deliver a new FREE exciting road safety training course for young people across Manchester.

UPS Road Code is a new training programme designed to teach young people who are pre-driving age about the hazards of driving and raise awareness of road safety.

The training makes use of useful practical content and workshops that have been designed by UPS to make young people aged 14-17 see the dangers they will face in the future as drivers and also as pedestrians.

As well as this, the training will include the use of two fantastic driving simulators that the young participants will use and gain the experience of what it is like to drive a car! This is a great opportunity for your group to offer this free training to your young people and help raise the awareness and importance of road safety. The sessions will be running across the summer and will consist of two 3.5 hour sessions taking place on Saturday mornings.

As the training is free the slots will be a first come first served allocation. The first training dates will be Saturday 28th July and the following Saturday 4th August. The training will take place at GMYN’s office in Ardwick Green.

There are 15 places available for each session. It is expected that the same young people will attend both sessions and a certificate of attendance and a “goody bag” will be given to all participants.

If you wish to find out more and book spaces for your group then please get in touch asap so that we can confirm details with you

GMYN has registered for localgiving.com

Localgiving.com is a social enterprise owned by the Community Foundation Network (CFN) and the Ardbrack Foundation, both registered charities dedicated to supporting local charities. Unlike other online giving websites that only list charities large enough to be registered with the Charity Commission, Localgiving.com includes small, local charities and community organisations that work hard to make your community a better place.

GMYN is looking for small donations that we can use to support our various projects that need this vital funding.

We would be grateful for any support and at the moment all donations will be matchfunded so GMYN will receive double the funding!

All the information regarding the projects and how to donate is on GMYN’s localgiving website – http://localgiving.com/charity/gmyn

Thanks for your support!

2012 GMYN Youth Volunteering Celebration Event

April 10, 2012 Leave a comment

Young volunteers celebrated in style at  GMYN’s Youth Volunteering Celebration Event on Saturday 31st March at the Mechanics Institute, Manchester City Centre.

The event was opened by the Lord Mayor of Manchester and was organised to celebrate the positive contribution young volunteers had made in the city over the past twelve months. The night consisted of award presentations that were handed out by Tony Lloyd MP and entertainment by young performers including Manchester youth dancing troupe Universal Connection, Ukulele player Francesca Davies (pictured with the Lord Mayor) singing and keyboard playing by Natasha Carter and a French Horn performance by Oliver Waite.

In a year where Manchester has seen young people struggle with a reduction in provision and opportunities, city centre riots that affected the image of young people generally and a huge rise in youth unemployment, this event was a great way to focus on the positive work achieved by young people instead. GMYN and guests really enjoyed celebrated the young volunteers’ tremendous contribution to the Manchester Community.

GMYN’s Managing Director, Alex Fairweather said “it was fantastic that we had this opportunity to showcase the huge contribution young volunteers in Manchester have made over the past twelve months. We are very proud of our involvement with youth volunteering and we will continue to promote the positive changes young people make to their local and wider community”
