Summer of a Lifetime

National Citizen Service (NCS)

This summer GMYN is offering a new project called ‘Summer of a Lifetime’ through the Government’s National Citizen Service programme. Summer of a Lifetime will be a fun and challenging project aiming to develop the confidence and sociability of young adults leaving school. The project is being delivered over 6 weeks in summer 2011 and consist of four groups of 15 school leavers, two groups from Manchester, one group from Oldham and one group from Bury. The Summer of a Lifetime Programme is supported by ‘V (http://vinspired.com/) and the ‘Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust’ (http://www.dkhlegacytrust.org/)

Project Activities

The Summer of a Lifetime project offers a range of activities for young adults to participate in, which will give them the opportunity to improve their skills in areas such as team work, problem solving, leadership and communication. Such activities could include:

  • Rock climbing
  • Canoeing & Kayaking
  • Archery
  • Team building exercises
  • Trampolining

There will also be activities that will give participants the chance to work on their social and personal development and also allow them to:

  • Meet new people
  • Make new friends
  • Gain new skills
  • Improve confidence and self esteem
  • Mix with people from different backgrounds
  • Improve employment prospects

The participants will be required to do two residentials (one rural and one urban) and they will also get involved in volunteering activities.
