GMYN’s new website

Greater Manchester Youth Network are moving away from WordPress to a new website. From 7th January 2013 the gmyn.co.uk address will point to the new site instead of to our WordPress blog. We will keep the blog live for a couple of weeks after the new site is launched but we will then be closing it. We’d like to thank those who have been following our blog and hope you’ll be visiting our new site to keep up-to-date with developments and opportunities.

Barclays Money Skills Project

Greater Manchester Youth Network has a new exciting peer education project available for young people aged 16 – 25 from Greater Manchester, who either are NEET or have been NEET. The project will provide the young people with 16 hours training to become money skills ‘Champions’. The ‘Champions’ will then volunteer by passing on the knowledge they have learnt to other young people. There are lots of benefits for young people getting involved in this project – they will gain lots of new skills, have an opportunity to get involved in an exciting peer education project and will even gain financial rewards. Give Get Go! Project Worker

Part Time – £22,958 – pro rata for 28 hours a week

Greater Manchester Youth Network (GMYN) is looking to recruit an appropriately skilled/experienced worker to plan, deliver and administer a range of informal learning sessions and volunteering activities for disadvantaged young people aged 16-19 who live in Harpurhey and Charlestown.

The Project Worker will be responsible for the delivery of the GMYN project called Give Get Go! funded by Public Health Manchester.

Calling all young people and youth organisations in Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester Youth Network are currently asking young people and youth organisations for their views about youth unemployment. The information provided will help to develop ideas for a new and different way of supporting young people to increase their chances of finding work that could be funded as part of the Talent Match programme that will start in the summer of 2013.

Talent Match is a new Big Lottery programme targeting 21 LEP areas with the highest numbers of 18-24 year olds not in education, employment or training. GMCVO is co-ordinating the development of a delivery partnership which will undertake the programme design for Talent Match in Greater Manchester. Please note: if you have a group of young people who meet regularly, GMYN would be happy to run a focus group to give the young people the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions, as an alternative to completing the online survey. Please email talentmatch@gmyn.co.uk

GMYN will also be developing a Talent Match Youth Panel. This group will volunteer throughout the different phases of the project development to ensure the entire process is driven and supported by young people. Please get in touch if you’d be interested in taking part.

Manchester Youth Council

Are you aged 13 – 18, passionate about making a difference in the area you live, interested in campaigning and influencing decisions that Manchester City Council make?

If so, this could be just the thing for you!

Manchester City Council are inviting young people to join Local Youth Panels, who will work on issues in their areas and also the Manchester Youth Council, who will work on city-wide issues.

We are holding events in August in North, Central and East Manchester to give people an opportunity to find out more information. Please find information attached and contact GMYN (details below) to book your place.

Project See V – Skills, employment and enjoyment through volunteering

After 4 months of volunteering activities and employability training, the Project See V group will graduate tomorrow. The group have been involved in a variety of different volunteering activities with a range of charities in Manchester. The activities have included gardening at Debdale Eco Centre, conservation at Hulme Garden Centre, a First Aid course through the Red Cross and a cooking course through the homeless charity Mustard Tree.
The young people have been encouraged to look at what skills they have gained from the volunteering and have also had training on job interview technique and CV writing. Several members of the group have progressed onto long term volunteering opportunities and employment.

FREE road safety driving training for young people (pre-driving age)

GMYN is working in partnership with UPS and UK Youth to deliver a new FREE exciting road safety training course for young people across Manchester.

UPS Road Code is a new training programme designed to teach young people who are pre-driving age about the hazards of driving and raise awareness of road safety.

The training makes use of useful practical content and workshops that have been designed by UPS to make young people aged 14-17 see the dangers they will face in the future as drivers and also as pedestrians.

As well as this, the training will include the use of two fantastic driving simulators that the young participants will use and gain the experience of what it is like to drive a car! This is a great opportunity for your group to offer this free training to your young people and help raise the awareness and importance of road safety.The sessions will be running across the summer and will consist of two 3.5 hour sessions taking place on Saturday mornings.

As the training is free the slots will be a first come first served allocation. The first training dates will be Saturday 28^th July and the following Saturday 4^th August. The training will take place at GMYN’s office in Ardwick Green.

There are 15 places available for each session. It is expected that the same young people will attend both sessions and a certificate of attendance and a “goody bag” will be given to all participants.
