Making a Difference 2011

GMYN is very pleased to share its latest Impact Report Making a Difference 2011 (PDF, 3.5Mb). The report gives an overview of our activities over the past twelve months and includes case studies from organisations and young people, as well as an insight into some of the projects we have been involved in delivering.

New entrepreneurship programme for 13 to 19 year olds

The ‘Who wants to be an Entrepreneur’ programme will be starting on Tuesday 24th January. This is a great opportunity for 13 – 19 year olds from Moss Side, Hulme, Whalley Range and North Manchester to learn entrepreneurial skills, budgeting and marketing skills and have an introduction to setting up their own business.

Making a Difference 2011 – GMYN Event December 8th 2011

GMYN welcomed over 70 attendees to its “Making a Difference” event on 8th December. Although it was dark, wet and cold outside, the atmosphere in St Thomas Centre was fantastic! With half of the guests young volunteers and the other half a mixture of partners, funders and beneficiaries, it was a great mixture of people.

The event started with presentations by our young volunteers on our various projects and services including NCS, Give Get Go and Global Xchange. It was great to see such passionate presentations by the young volunteers who all clearly showed how they had enjoyed and benefited from being involved with the projects. We also saw presentations from partners

including ARC, Age Concern and YPSF who talked about their experiences of working with GMYN and what difference the young volunteers has made for their organisations projects and services.

Once the presentations were over, it was time for discussion. the theme of the evening was for young volunteers to facilitate discussions with the delegates. Questions were asked such as “What are the gaps in services for young people?” and “How can we work together to develop new services?” It was great to see such positive discussion and it was just a shame that we ran out of time just when new innovative ideas were being presented. The young volunteers took notes from the discussions and guests were welcomed to write ideas on the paper table cloths.

The evening ended with hot food a chance for networking. The guests were able to chat to the young volunteers and find out more about their experiences and what their future plans are. The final part of the night was to enjoy the food whilst listening

to one of the Global Xchange volunteers – Sangh entertain everyone with his guitar playing and singing.

Overall everyone at GMYN thought the event was a great success and we want to thank everybody who contributed. Particularly we would like to thank all the young volunteers who helped out on the night, the event would not have been the same without you!

GMYN is offering a 20% reduction on any training services and room bookings that are booked from November until January 2012.

GMYN offers a number of training services delivered by skilled and qualified trainers. Examples of some of the courses we can offer are shown on our training services page .

Our training can be delivered from our own training room in our offices (shown in the photo) or we’d be more than happy to train in your own venue. We can also offer bespoke training to meet your needs so if you would like to discuss a course not listed below whether it be a one off training session or more long term courses please do contact us at 0161 274 3377 or email info@gmyn.co.uk

Our training/meeting room is also available for hire for individuals/groups/GMYN members.

The room has plenty of natural daylight and is equipped for different meeting/training environments depending on your needs. We can provide a laptop with Internet access and the room has a wall mounted projector that can be connected to laptops.

The room can accommodate up to 16 people in a boardroom (central table) or horseshoe (no table) setup and 18 in theatre style.

Feel Good Fund

What is the fund about? This pot of fuding has been set up to help groups of young people (aged 16-25) acrossManchester to create and deliver events or activities that focus around the ‘5steps to well-being’. Be Active, Connect, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give! These local activities will form part of a wider campaign to promote well-being among young people through highlighting the 5 steps.

National Citizen Service celebration event

Young people from Manchester, Bury and Oldham were rewarded for their hard work and volunteering during the National Citizen Service. An event was held at the Royal Exchange Theatre on the 21st October and was kindly sponsored by The Rotary Club. Manchester MP Tony Llloyd and Bury Councillor Nick Parnell gave their thanks to the young people for the volunteering they carried out. All of the young people received certificates, which were presented to them by ex Emmerdale actress Ursula Holden Gill.
The young people thoroughly enjoyed being reunited with each other and reminising about all the fun they had during the residentials, volunteering and social action projects. Well done to all the young people who were involved in such a fantastic project!

Who wants to be an Entrepreneur?

GMYN is running a new project to help show young people aged between 13 –19 that they have the skills and ability to come up with ideas to create and run their own business.
It will not aim to turn every young person into the next Dragon or Richard Branson. However it aims to help them to develop life and business skills, which will help them throughout their lives. The programme is inclusive and aims to enable all participants to develop through fun and creative sessions. It will cater for participants who are at different levels of learning and who have different learning styles

Who is the programme is for ?

The programme is for 13 -19 year olds living in the following areas.
• Charlestown
• Higher Blackley, Crumpsall, Cheetham Hill, Harpurhey, Moston
• Whalley Range
• City Centre
• Moss Side, Hulme

How the programme will be delivered ?

The programme will consist of eight sessions and each session will last between one and one and half hours

What will participants gain from the programme?

All participants will come away from the course feeling like they have developed and further advanced their communication, budgeting, marketing, leadership, networking, and organisational skills. We also hope to accredit some of the participant with V Impact Awards, V Thank you Awards, and ASDAN qualifications.

GiveGetGo! Volunteering Programme – New Dates

Two new programmes!

GiveGetGo! is a great way for you to explore what volunteering is, try out a volunteering activity or two, reflect on your experiences and look ahead!

What will young people get out of it?

- A certificate of recognition for their volunteering

- The opportunity to meet new people & try out a volunteering activity with other young people.

- Travel reimbursement and light refreshments.

- The option to work towards a volunteering accreditation.

Wednesday evening programme

28^th September 4:30-6:30 5^th October 4:30-7:30 12^th October 4:30-6:30

Saturday programme

1^st October 1-3pm 8^th October 11-3pm 15^th October 1-3pm

All sessions will start from GMYN office in Ardwick. We hope to run further programmes in North and South Manchester so if you are interested but can’t make the below dates then still get in touch and we can let you know when other dates come up.

Young people must be able to commit to all three dates of their chosen programme (either Wednesday or Saturday) and make their own way to GMYN.
